How One Egg Holds the Key to Breaking Trauma Cycles
It was on a cold, windy evening in Ukraine that my husband and I stood in a little gift shop. I picked up a Matryoshka doll, thinking of bringing it home for my sister-in-law, who had been faithfully and lovingly caring for our children. I held it, and something clicked deep inside me.
*That’s it. That’s the key.*
As a nurse and doula with a passion for redemptive birth, I saw this simple wooden doll as a powerful icon of maternal lineage—
Mothers inside Mothers inside Mothers.
Grandmother. Mother. Daughter.
I can’t hold one without wondering about their stories: the love and the pain, the triumphs and the hardships, and the quiet lessons passed from one generation to the next. This is the legacy we inherit.
The Generations Hidden Within
This beautiful storykeeper also reflects a profound biological reality often called the “maternal net.” Simply put, when your grandmother was pregnant with your mother, she wasn’t just carrying one child. Inside her tiny developing daughter, all the eggs your mother would ever have were already forming—including the one that would become you.
You were already there, experiencing the waves of joy or sorrow, safety or fear that your mother and grandmother felt. Every cell in your body was shaped by those shared experiences. When trauma runs through the generations, the weight can feel crushing—like the Matryoshka dolls are locked together in pain.
But Here’s the Hope:
What is Passed Down Can Be Redeemed
The truth that planted its seed deep inside me that day a few years ago — the truth I now have the privilege of building a home for — is this:
What is passed down can also be transformed. It can be redeemed.
Nevaeh Living: Restoring the Sacred Bond
Imagine the doll in the middle begins to heal. From that single point of healing, restoration flows both outward and inward. Like a warm light kindled in the center of the stack, the transformation spreads through every layer.
Nevaeh Living exists to house this healing – to be the safe, sacred space where one mother can become the turning point in her lineage and begin breaking the cycles of pain.
We focus on helping one mother at a time. Through dedicated rest, support, and guidance, she begins to trust again, to feel safe, and to truly live again. We walk with her toward a redemptive birth—a profoundly healing experience where labor and delivery become a sacred victory instead of a continuation of fear or pain.
Healing the Future
When a mother finds safety and healing during pregnancy and the tender postpartum months, she changes the environment for the life growing inside her—and for the generations nested within. New, healthier patterns take root.
In this work of restoration, the healing reaches even further. It flows forward to her baby and the eggs already forming inside her daughter. And it flows backward too—bringing peace and redemption to the generations before her. By choosing healing today, she becomes the chain breaker. The bridge builder. The place where trauma stops and restoration begins.
A Different Story for the Next Generation
Through compassionate care, counseling, parenting support, and community, she learns to nurture with security and strength. She experiences a birth that restores her sense of worth and power. She builds an attachment that whispers to her baby: *You are safe. You are wanted. You are worthy.*
That child grows up knowing love instead of fear. And if she is a girl, the eggs forming inside her will carry a different story—one of resilience, dignity, and hope.
This is how we break cycles. Not by ignoring the nested generations, but by healing them from the inside out.
